The outage was caused by a software update that went wrong on one of AT&T’s network servers³⁶. The update was intended to improve the network performance, but instead it caused a chain reaction that disrupted the service for many customers.

The outage lasted for about six hours, from around 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, February 22, 2024⁴⁵. Some customers reported that they were unable to make or receive calls, send or receive text messages, or access the internet on their devices.

The outage also affected some emergency services, such as 911, in some areas. Several agencies across the country urged AT&T customers to use alternative methods to contact 911, such as landlines, other carriers, or friends and family.

AT&T apologized for the inconvenience and said that it was working to prevent such incidents from happening again. The company also offered a credit to its customers who were affected by the outage.
