For years, technology was viewed as on of the safest career paths available. Learn to code, earn certifications, build a portfolio, and opportunities would follow. While technology remains a critical industry, many professionals are discovering that finding employment in tech has become significantly more challenging than it was just a few years ago. The reality is that the tech industry is changing.
During the rapid growth period of the late 2010s and early 2020s, companies hired aggressively. Startups received large amounts of investment capital, remote expanded, an businesses rushed to digitize their operations. Demand for software developers, IT specialists, cloud engineers, and cyber security professionals reached record levels. Today the landscape looks different. Many large companies have become more cautious with spending. Economic uncertainty has pushed organizations to focus on efficiency rather than expansion. Instead of hiring multiple junior developers, businesses are often looking for experienced professionals who can handle several responsibilities at once.
Artificial intelligence has also begun changing workflows. While AI is not replacing most technology jobs outright, it is allowing smaller teams to accomplish much more work. Tasks that once required hours of manual effort can now be completed in minutes with the help of AI powered tools. This shift has increased productivitiy but also reduced the urgency for companies to expand their teams.
Entry level workers are facing the greatest challenge. Many job postings now require several years of experience, creating a difficult situation for recent graduates and career changers. Companies want experienced talen, but everyone has to start somewhere. Competition has increased as well. Remote work has enabled employers to recruit candidates from all over the world. A postition that once attracted a few local applicants may now receive hundreds of even thousands of applications from around the world. Despite the challenges, opportunities still exist.
Businesses continue to rely on software, cloud infrastructure, cyber security, automation, and digital communication. Technology remains deeply integrated into nearly every industry. Healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, finance, education, and entertainment all require skilled technical professionals. The key for job seekers is adaptability. Building practical projects, maintaining a strong portfolio, learning modern tools, and continuously improving skills can help candidates stand out in a crowded market. Demonstrating the ability to solve real world problems often carries more weight than simply listing certifications or degrees.
As someone who builds software projects and experiments with new technologies, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly the industry evolves. The demand for technology professionals has not dissappeard yet, but the expectations have changed immensely. Success in todays market requires continuous learning, persistence and a willingness to adapt to new tools and workflows.
Look the tech industry has been hit hard by major layoffs from companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Intel, Meta, Salesforce, Oracle, Cisco, PayPal, Intuit, HP and Dell Technologies with all reporting record number profits. The current tech market is booming but a sharp contrast to the rapid hiring seen just a few years ago. They have shifted resources to AI, automation, and operational efficiency with much less employees. So these layoffs are increasing competition for the available positions left for us, and created challenges for both experienced professionals and newcomers entering the industry. Also have to factor in with a surplus of potential candidates for one tech position, the salary will be significanlty less as well. While I don’t have a direct solution, I can only tell you keep doing you, keep your head held high, keep learning, and show off your projects. Be proud of your accomplishments.
